FAFSA School Codes

When completing your FAFSA application, you will need the FAFSA school codes (also known as Title IV Institution Codes) for each college or university that you are applying to.

Once you obtain the school codes, you will need to enter the six-character code directly in your FAFSA form. By doing so, those schools that you specify will receive your FAFSA results.

You can obtain a FAFSA code in many ways, such as by contacting the school’s financial aid office or by using a search form. When you collect codes for the schools that you wish to apply, it is important to get the correct FAFSA code. Since colleges and universities tend to have many programs and campuses, they tend to have several codes. Therefore, you will need to check thoroughly before sending off your FAFSA application. If you fail to do so, the college or university may not receive your FAFSA results.

What are school codes for FAFSA?

Now that you know that you must gather the FAFSA college codes for the schools you wish to apply, you may be wondering how to go about doing so.

First, you need to know that the U.S. Department of Education assigns school codes for each college and university. Schools with a Federal School Code participate in the Title IV federal student aid programs and will be searchable through many different entities. It is important to include this code on your form before you sign the FAFSA application, as your chosen schools will not receive your FAFSA information otherwise.

What do school codes look like?

It is essential that you know that Federal School Codes all look the same. They are all six-character alphanumeric codes that either begin with the number zero or the letter B, E or G. Each code exclusively identifies eligible colleges and universities who participate in Title IV federal student aid. If you have a school code, but it appears not to work, be sure to check the format.

If it does not match the format outlined above, you will need to double check the code from a different source since the Federal School Code you have is most likely incorrect. If you have listed a school incorrectly, you can update your FAFSA application with correct information after it has been submitted.

How to Find FAFSA School Codes Online

The easiest and most convenient way to find FAFSA codes for colleges and universities is online through the Federal Code Search tool. Through this tool, which can be found on the FAFSA website, you can search for schools and their codes.

When searching, you will need to provide the school year and the state, while the city and school name are optional. However, if you do add the school name, the tool can recognize common acronyms, abbreviations and alternative spellings. If the college is outside of the U.S., you will need to select the name of the country or “Foreign Country” as the state.

How to Find FAFSA School Codes through an Excel Document

You can search through the Federal School Code list by downloading the official school code document through FAFSA’s official website. When you find the Federal School Code List, you will see that it is a searchable document in Excel format. With more than 7,000 college and universities, including 400 foreign institutions, you can search for the colleges and universities any way that you want.

Note: The Federal School Code List is updated each calendar year on the first of February, May, August, and November.

Additional Ways to Find FAFSA School Codes

If you cannot find a FAFSA school code through one of the methods listed above, there are other ways you may be able to find it. First, try visiting the financial aid section of the school’s website, since most colleges and universities list their Federal School Codes there. Next, you can search for a school code while you complete your FAFSA form. Lastly, you can call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). Through these many resources, you will be able to find the school codes for the colleges and universities you are applying to.

Tips for Finding School Codes

If you are using the Federal Code Search tool to look for FAFSA college codes and you are not having any luck, you may need to change the way you are searching.

First, try using just the name of the college or university. If you are using an acronym or abbreviation, delete them from your search. Also, you can search for schools in a specific state and city without a school name. However, the chances are high that your search will result in many schools, so be sure to read each name carefully as you sort through them.

What else can you do with school codes?

FAFSA codes for colleges and universities are not only to look up the name of schools you want to include in your FAFSA form. If you have a school’s six-characteristic code but do not know the name of the school, you can use it to look up the school name.

With the Federal School Code search feature, you can learn details about schools that you plan on applying to, such as tuition rates, graduation rates and fee amounts. You can even compare that information for up to ten schools on the same search. However, if you need to compare more than ten schools, you will need to remove some from the “Selected Schools” table. Then, you can add and compare the additional schools.
